Summary of event

Side event on “Public and safe spaces for women: a south-south contribution” being organized jointly by Fundación Avina, Cities Alliance, Safetipin and UN-Habitat. This session will focus on the contributions that women have made in generating inclusive public spaces by bringing together successful experiences of cities’ transformation implemented in the Global South. It will look at how local communities, governments and private sector can partner not only to improve public space but also to collect data and use it for advocacy, decision-making, planning and monitoring. The LAC view will be shared by Fundación Avina from its regional programme on Public Spaces. UN-Habitat will add the experiences of working on women and girls safety in Africa (South Africa, Kenya and Tanzania) and Arab States (Lebanon, Palestine, Egypt). Safetipin will add the perspective of a technology platform that works to make public spaces safer for women and girls in cities.
