Khartoum 2 July 2018-- UN-Habitat Sudan and Ministry of International Cooperation, the Government of Sudan recently signed the  Habitat Country Programme Document Sudan 2018-2021 in Khartoum.

The document provides a framework for engagement with national and local governments, as well as key stakeholders in line with UN-Habitat’s Strategic Plan and its country-level priorities and activities by establishing a clear linkage with the national development plans, United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) 2018-2021 and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 11.

Mr. Wael Al-Ashhab, Head of UN-Habitat Sudan Country Programme, emphasized a wide range of technical and substantive support to a variety of stakeholders is needed in Sudan to achieve socially and environmentally sustainable urbanization and to promote adequate shelter for all. Mr. Wael assured UN-Habitat will provide continuous support and commitment to the Government and partners to achieve the New Urban Agenda in Sudan to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable.

Mr. Idries Suleiman, Minister of International Cooperation of the Government of Sudan expressed a great appreciation to the effort of UN-Habitat Programme in Sudan, and also welcomed the CPD that highlighted the UN-Habitat’s continuous support on the urgent needs to Sudan such as national urban policy, housing, land and property rights (HLP), urban planning, local economic development and support to communities in need including the IDP and returnees.

UN-Habitat Sudan Country Programme has been actively engaging with key government counterparts, on both at the federal and state levels, as well as key UN agencies, donor community and international and national organizations in the country. In compliance with New Urban Agenda, the Sudan United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) 2018-2021 and the Multi-Year Humanitarian Strategy 2017-2019. UN-Habitat Sudan has been working on humanitarian, peace building and development assistance for the Government of Sudan under the coordination of Sudan United Nations Country Team and Humanitarian Coordination Team.
