Meet our winners: portraits of the 2023 Scroll of Honour Awardees

Nairobi, 5 September 2023—Last month, UN-Habitat announced the 2023 UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour Award winners.
This award is one of the most prestigious in the field of sustainable urban development. It recognizes initiatives and individuals who have made outstanding contributions to sustainable urbanization and improving the quality of urban life.
This year, UN-Habitat received more than 80 nominations including individuals, organizations, and projects originating from Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America.
The five winning candidates were examples of best practice initiatives and achievements that contribute to Sustainable Development Goal 11: Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable.
The award will be handed out at the global observance of World Habitat Day, which will be taking place in the city of Baku, Azerbaijan, on Monday, 2 October 2023.

2023 UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour Award winners

Assembleia de Moradores, Braga, Portugal
Assembleia de Moradores – a living lab that gathers several neighbour associations from vulnerable neighbourhoods in the city of Braga, Portugal – was awarded the UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour Award for its groundbreaking project that dovetails with the World Habitat Day 2023 theme of “Resilient urban economies. Cities as drivers of growth and recovery.”

Ecovironment, Sierra Leone
Founded by a local – Foday David Kamara, of the Bumeh Slum – Ecovironment has fast forged a name for itself for providing jobs for underprivileged youths and women and creating resilient communities in Sierra Leone.

Fundación ProEmpleo, Mexico City, Mexico
Fundación ProEmpleo – a 28-year old non-profit organization born as a response to the unemployment and instability left by the economic crisis of 1994 in Mexico – promotes, through training and consulting programmes, a range of economic activities such as job creation, entrepreneurship, and the growth of microenterprises.

Fundo Imobiliário Comunitário para Aluguel, São Paulo, Brazil
Founded in 2015 in São Paulo, Fundo Imobiliário Comunitário para Aluguel (FICA) crowdfunds and buys properties in downtown São Paulo and rents them at non-speculative prices.

Dubai Municipality, United Arab Emirates
For its initiative of implementing the integrated fat, oil and grease waste (FOG) recycling project, Dubai Municipality makes it to this year’s list of Scroll of Honour Award winners.
