The UN-Habitat’s report - Cities and Pandemics: Towards a more just, green and healthy future – evidences how cities can reduce the impact of future pandemics and become more prosperous, fair and environmentally friendly. The Report calls for the response and recovery to pandemics to be based on human rights principles. It outlines how cities should lead the move towards a New Social Contract between governments, the public, civil society and the private sector.

Non-motorised transport (NMT) offers basic and affordable mobility, access to public transport, and health benefits. Ethiopia’s Non-Motorised Transport (NMT) Policy 2020-2029 has been launched on the World Bicycle Day on 3rd July 2020 and spells out the country’s commitment and measures on walking and cycling planned for the next 10 years to improve mobility, road safety and facilitate inclusive urbanisation.

Walking and cycling are healthy and pollution-free forms of mobility that are fundamental to life. In African cities, many are dependent on these modes as their primary means of transport. Even for those who choose public transport or personal motor vehicles, walking often becomes the dominant mode for short trips during the day. The poor quality of infrastructure for active modes, however, sends a message that pedestrians and cyclists are not welcome in the urban environment.

This study reviews the literature on the meaning and impact of the right to adequate housing for persons with disabilities in cities. It uses the foundational framework of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR), and demonstrates how the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) provides a new understanding of this complex right.
