The upcoming 2020 HLPF Special Event on the “Official launch of the SDG6 Global Acceleration Framework” to be held on Thursday 9 July from 08:00 – 09:30 a.m. EDT (15:00 – 16:30 East Africa Time), will feature the Executive Director alongside ten other UN Principals who will reaffirm their support to achieve SDG6 within the Decade of Action. The event will be opened by the President of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, while the Secretary-General will provide closing remarks.

Hosted by UN-Water, the Sustainable Development Goal 6 Global Acceleration Framework launch will be a high-level and multi-stakeholder moment to generate commitments for ambitious solutions on water and sanitation in support of the Decade of Action to deliver SDGs by 2030. The Framework (will be available here) is driven by country demand and will align the international community to strengthen country planning, implementation and knowledge sharing for SDG 6 while supporting country response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

UN-Habitat will commit its support to the Framework by emphasizing four specific areas: (1) Actions to prevent the spread of COVID-19 amongst the urban poor in slums and informal settlements; (2) Support to stronger water operators through scalable and well-founded Water Operators’ Partnerships; (3) Innovations to support water and sanitation service providers in tackling the challenge of climate change and (4) Support to greater disaggregation of data that can serve decision making and guide investments more effectively.
