Statement by the Executive Director of UN-Habitat:
Condolences and solidarity following the earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand

29 March 2025
I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences to all those affected by the earthquake that struck Myanmar and Thailand yesterday. I am deeply saddened by the loss of lives and the destruction caused by this disaster. In this moment of crisis, I want to express my deepest solidarity with the people of Myanmar and Thailand.
During these difficult times, we must come together to support the affected people and communities with our full commitment and capacities. UN-Habitat stands ready to contribute to recovery efforts—helping not just to restore what was lost, but to build back better for a more resilient future.
UN-Habitat established its country office in Myanmar to support recovery efforts following Cyclone Nargis in 2008. Since then, we have remained a trusted partner, with extensive experience in earthquake response and resilient recovery.
In both Myanmar and Thailand, we have worked hand in hand with communities to rebuild safer, stronger, and more resilient homes and neighborhoods.
We know that earthquakes do not only destroy buildings—they disrupt lives, economies, and sadly, the hopes of entire communities. Alongside humanitarian and development partners, and most importantly with the affected communities themselves, we are committed to helping rebuild not only homes, but also hope.
